Today I wanted to share a little bit about my personal development journey and explain the power of investing in yourself. It’s not something that we really get taught to do or even believe that it is something that we SHOULD do. But I’d like to open your mind to what IS POSSIBLE, and that is that there is so much value that comes with investing in yourself.
So what do I mean by investing in yourself?
Well, in this context I am talking about financially, emotionally, mentally and physically investing in your personal development. I know for many already in the personal development world, investing in yourself in this way is a no brainer. But I’d love to talk specifically to those of you who have not considered attending courses, workshops or even hiring a life coach. You’re probably wondering ‘WHY WOULD I NEED TO INVEST IN MY PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?’
Let me share a little bit about my own personal experiences so far…
Over the past 5 years I have been deeply and fiercely committed to my personal development journey. Since finishing high school 12 years ago I have continued my personal and educational journey and it has been one of the best investments I have committed to. I have studied part of a Business degree, completed my Bachelors in Education (Primary), completed my coaching certification with IIN New York, done various business and life coaching sessions with other coaches, in 2017 completed the Bridge Experience with Alexi Panos and Preston Smiles and completed various other online coaching courses over the years. All of these experiences and investments I have made have amplified and contributed to both my professional and personal life in so many ways, but not all investments have gone to plan, or so I thought at the time.
In 2013 I graduated university with a $20,000 HECS debt unable to get a full time position as a teacher it’s something I’ve talked about before, and it really was such a pivotal time in my life. It was the beginning of my very painful awakening for me, as I came to a crossroads with where I was headed in my career whilst at the same time being in the depths of a very painful relationship with a highly narcissistic individual (which I did not know at the time!). The reason this was such an awakening time for me was because I felt like I had been hit hard with a very big lesson that I needed to make in life, that being ‘things don’t always work out in life the way we expected them to’. The education sector had changed dramatically during my studies and when I graduated I was left with very little employment opportunities. There wasn’t much warning or any support from the university when I graduated and so I found it extremely difficult to navigate this challenge on my own. It was an absolutely gut wrenching experience at the time and I ended up being bed ridden for 3 months with debilitating anxiety and depression. I was holding on to my expectations for dear life and I desperately was trying to make this career work, even though I kept hitting a brick wall at every turn.
My turning point...
Eventually I got myself out of the victim mindset by taking a new and empowered frame of mind. I surrendered to the universe and asked for guidance. I asked what I could do if it wasn't my purpose in life to be a Primary School teacher that I had dreamed of being. While the answer didn't appear in my lap overnight I now know that I was being divinely guided with everything that happened next.
In the months that followed I started to read blogs online by coaches and entrepreneurs on a variety of different topics about nutrition, self love and self care and conscious business to name a few. I was blown away by all the incredible people out there doing this type of work and it made me wonder "could I possibly do something like this one day?" Simply by allowing myself to ask these questions my whole world changed. Doors started to open – I started attending workshops and meeting inspiring women all who were living a life filled with passion and purpose as coaches. And within 4 months I was enrolled to become a certified coach myself!
From that moment onwards I realised that the more I trusted, surrendered and took empowered action the more everything started to fall into place. I started to experience this understanding that everything was always working out for me, that I was always being guided as long as I was brave enough to keep taking the steps that were being presented in front of me. As you know I don’t believe things are just a coincidence in life. The funny thing about finding your purpose is that we are actually always on purpose, even when we are out of alignment and not in the flow of our purpose. These moments actually highlight the misalignment to us and allow us to get back to finding our truth and our personal power. And further more we are collecting all our pieces of the puzzle that make up the journey of our life. We learn new skills, meet new people, have new experiences and continue to create the version of ourselves that we are today. Without them we wouldn’t be here in this moment living the life that we’re living or having the exact aspirations that we have for the future.
3 years on from becoming a certified coach I believe I have truly found my calling and my purpose that was sparked by the darkest time in my life. After all the events that have transpired since 2013 I can honestly say that I have never looked back. I have continuously been guided on my path, gaining the tools and skills that have enabled me to build and grow the wonderful community that supports women through narcissistic abuse recovery as you have experienced, but I know that I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I had not of invested in myself.
I share this part of my story with you because I wanted to explain that part of how I have navigated my personal journey so far has come from the personal investments I have made in myself. What I have learned is that the more I have honoured and valued myself and invested $1,000's for workshops, courses, certificates etc. in myself the more I have been able to be surrounded by people who have been able to mentor and guide me through my challenges. Towards the end of last year I made a big financial investment in my personal development that was a huge financial stretch for me. While I have become a lot more comfortable investing in myself over the last few years I still get nervous and have to think about the choices that I make for my growth and development.
What I’ve learned is that our growth really does happen outside of our comfort zone in every shape and form and I can honestly say I have gone outside my comfort zone and moved mountains to give myself these important opportunities.
So I wanted this to be a powerful reminder that you can have those opportunities for your life too.
It’s amazing to experience how supported we actually are by the universe especially when we make investments in ourselves that are going to help take our life to the next level. If you are currently looking to make an investment in yourself but are sitting on the fence, then the following questions may support you in taking the leap.
Sometimes the risk of the unknown is actually a blessing in disguise, for what may actually be possible in our life.
So Ask Yourself...
What would my life look like if you took empowered steps towards my personal growth and development?
What is holding me back from making choices that will help me make self honouring choices that will help me create a life that up until now I’ve only dreamed of?
How much do I value and honour myself to get support, learn the tools and skills that will help me to continue to navigate life from an empowered and powerful state?
Have you invested in yourself? What have you noticed about yourself and your life having made those investments?
Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
